Is CA a post graduate degree ?

Whether CA is a degree or not is subjective and depends upon whether you are in the academic world or in the industry. In teaching, whether CA is a post-graduate degree or not depends on the university and not ICAI (The Institute Of Chartered Accountants Of India).

Let us consider an example. One of my friends who is a B.Com. and FCA ( a Fellow Member of ICAI) was not eligible for appointment as a full-time faculty at a business school affililated under University of Mumbai a couple of years back . The director said that CA is not a post-graduate degree under the rules of University of Mumbai. Hence he needs to pass M.Com. and come there once again after 2 years and he guaranteed him employment. He even went to the extent of saying that instead of pursuing Ph.D., which my friend was interested in doing, he should pass M.Com. first.

The interesting part of the story is that the director himself did not have a post-graduate degree. If you check out the profiles of many directors of b-schools you will see many of them have not done their Ph.D. which is a requirement under the present regulations and should come under close scrutiny. But those were better times when they joined. Not now. Well that is a different issue altogether.

But from the industry point of view it has always been and will be the best professional degree in finance you can have in India. But It seems from the present trend now that CFA (the American one, not ICFAI) is another degree many people want to have after completing their CA. Many of my students have done it after doing their MBA.
