What is the most worthless college degree you can receive?

In India, the more relevant question would be what would you do with the most worthless college degree you have? Professional education like M.B.A. or engineering is the most sought after here. People travel the globe and pay a life time's earnings to be admitted into a b-school. Nobody would even ask you where you graduated from once you get a company placement which is like a perquisite before you finally qualify.

The movie "3 Idiots" has shown this very well. Do see the film as it is one of the finest movies ever made here about the campus.

Hi Suprio,

I have not watched the movie "3 Idiots" and am very unlikely to see it. Two pages of the "novel" it is based on assaulted my senses in more ways than anything I have ever read.

People will watch this movie precisely because they want "in" on the prestigious life that is portrayed therein.

Finally, you draw the philosophical conclusion about the school not mattering. It is noble in thought but not rooted in reality! Everyone knows that the starting salary for a lowly programmer job in Bangalore pays 10-15% more if you graduated from an IIT. When I started graduate school here in the US, I was surprised that a Chinese professor attributed my understanding and questioning of a topic to being from an IIT (he guessed it).

These schools provide one with implements of success. True success, however, depends on one's talent and drive in terms of controllable features. Skin color, attractiveness and likability can all be controlled to some extent but they matter as well.

The polish of Bollywood movies has gone way up, that much is very true.

Sandeep,

Thanks for your comments which have come in as a pleasant surprise and added value to the blog.

What I wanted to emphasise is after doing M.B.A. or any PG-professional course in India, and then becoming successful, the place from where a person graduated (done his UG like B.Com, B.Sc., etc.) or the course itself does not remain relevant to the person if either is worthless.

You should watch the movie "3 Idiots" as an Indian student and then I would love to discuss. There is so much in it to discuss with a person like you. The Chetan Bhagat sub-plot..did he write what we have seen?....is pointless. Do check up in January where I have discussed in detail the management concepts and the real life character on which Amir Khan's Rancho is based. There is no fiction here.

Actually I have talked about the UG college which comes in between the high school and the b-school.

Your example is very apt to what I have discussed.

Thanks and regards,

Suprio
